Choosing your tyres

Tier What you get Who it suits From, fitted
Budget Solid basics. Wet grip and noise can trail better tyres Low-mileage and older cars, tight budgets £[__]
Mid-range Often close to premium on wet grip and wear Most drivers £[__]
Premium Short wet stopping, low noise, long wear High-mileage, heavy or powerful cars, motorway drivers £[__]

Every new tyre sold in the UK carries a label with three ratings: fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise. Wet grip matters most on Glasgow roads. We’ll show you the label for each tyre we quote.

A budget tyre is fine on a low-mileage runaround. It’s a poor choice on a heavy SUV, or a car you drive hard on the M8. We’ll say so.

Do you need new tyres now?

What you see What it means What to do
Tread at about 3mm Wet braking is getting worse Plan to replace
Tread at 1.6mm or below Illegal Replace now
A bulge, a cut or exposed cord Structural damage Replace immediately
Cracks in the sidewall or between the tread blocks Ageing rubber Have it checked
A tyre over about 6 years old Rubber hardens with age Have it inspected
A tyre over 10 years old Past the usual replacement limit Replace, whatever the tread

The legal minimum for cars is 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Each illegal tyre can bring a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points. Safety bodies suggest replacing at 3mm, because wet braking distances grow long before the legal limit.

Try the 20p test. Slot a 20p into a main groove. If you can’t see the coin’s outer band, the tread is above the legal limit.

How old are your tyres?

Tyres age by time as well as by miles. There’s no legal age limit for ordinary cars. The usual guidance is to have tyres inspected from around six years old and to replace them by ten at the latest, whatever the tread. Old rubber dries, hardens and cracks.

Find the date on the sidewall. Look for “DOT”, followed by letters and numbers. The last four digits are the week and year the tyre was made. 3619 means week 36 of 2019. Three digits means it was made before 2000, and it should come off now. Check the spare too. It ages sitting in the boot.

We check the date code on every new tyre before we fit it. [CONFIRM]

How to read your tyre size

Look at the sidewall. A size like 205/55 R16 91V reads like this:

  • 205: width in millimetres
  • 55: sidewall height, as a percentage of the width
  • R: radial construction
  • 16: wheel diameter in inches
  • 91: load index
  • V: speed rating

Send us a photo of the sidewall, or your registration, and we’ll match it. Don’t guess. The wrong size, load index or speed rating can fail an MOT.

All-season, summer or winter?

Glasgow winters are wet and cold more than snowy. Summer tyres stiffen in the cold and grip less. Winter tyres stay soft and grip better in low temperatures, but wear faster in warm spells. All-season tyres sit between the two, and suit many drivers who do mostly local miles. We’ll recommend one for your car and your driving.
