Paint is the last step of a repair, and the easiest to see if it’s wrong. Most of what makes a respray last happens before any paint goes on. We’ll show you where your money goes.

Where the money goes

Paint isn’t the biggest part of a respray bill. Preparation is. Stripping back, repairing dents and rust, filling and sanding, masking: that’s where the hours go. A straight, rust-free car with sound paint costs far less to prepare than one with dents, corrosion and poor earlier repairs.

That’s why two quotes for the same job can differ by hundreds. Ask what each one includes for preparation.

How we paint a car

  1. We inspect the car. Paint code, condition and any earlier repairs.
  2. We repair damage first. Dents, rust and cracks come before any paint. See dent removal and car body repair.
  3. We sand or strip the surface. Paint sticks to a clean, keyed surface.
  4. We mask everything that stays, including windows, trim and lights.
  5. We prime.
  6. We spray the colour in thin coats, built up gradually.
  7. We apply clear coat.
  8. We let it cure. [CONFIRM: in a booth or oven.]
  9. We polish it.
  10. We check it in daylight, then hand the car back.

Colour matching and blending

Your paint code is the starting point. Paint fades, though, and a code can’t tell us how much yours has faded, or how the panel beside it has aged. So we match to the code, adjust against the car, and blend into the neighbouring panels so there’s no visible edge.

Metallic and pearl finishes change with the angle you look from. We check the result in daylight, not just under workshop lights. If the colour isn’t right, tell us before you leave. [CONFIRM: We’ll redo it at no charge.]

Finishes

FinishWhat it isWorth knowing
SolidOne flat colourThe easiest to match
MetallicColour with metal flecks that catch the lightNeeds more care to match and blend
PearlColour that shifts with the lightThe hardest to match. Needs the most care
[CONFIRM: Matt and satin]A flat, low-shine finishCan’t be polished out like gloss. A scratch stays until the panel is repainted

Changing your car's colour

A colour change is a bigger job than it looks. Door shuts, the boot, under the bonnet and trim edges all show the old colour unless they’re painted too. That adds time and cost. Decide with us how far to go.

If your car’s colour changes, tell DVLA so the V5C matches, and let your insurer know. Check current DVLA guidance for the steps.

What to ask any painter

  • What does the price include for preparation?
  • Which paint and clear coat do you use?
  • Do you match to my paint code, and blend into the neighbouring panels?
  • Where is the paint cured, and for how long?
  • What’s the warranty, in writing?
  • Can I see a finished car in daylight?

A very cheap respray usually cuts corners in preparation. Ask what’s left out.

How long does it take?

Paint needs time to cure before it’s polished. We give you a date at the estimate and tell you if it changes.

Job Typical time
A bumper respray [CONFIRM: 1 to 2 days]
A single panel [CONFIRM: 1 to 2 days]
Several panels [CONFIRM: 2 to 4 days]
[CONFIRM: A full respray] [CONFIRM: 3 to 5 days or more]

How much does car painting cost in Glasgow?

A bumper respray£[250]
A single panel£[__]
A panel with repair work first£[__]
[CONFIRM: A full respray, small car]£[__]
[CONFIRM: A full respray, larger car]£[__]
Prices include VAT. [CONFIRM: VAT status.] Price depends on the size of the job, the condition of the car, how much preparation it needs, the type of paint (metallic and pearl cost more), and any trim that has to come off. If one quote comes in far below the rest, ask what it skips.

Pay yourself, or claim on insurance?

If damage came from a collision, a claim may cover the paint, depending on your policy. If it’s a scrape or wear, the repair often costs less than your excess. A claim may affect your premium or no-claims discount. Ring your insurer if you’re unsure. If another driver caused the damage, see non-fault accident repair.
