Repair or replace?

Repair usually costs less. There’s no new part to buy, and the bumper you already have keeps its factory fit. But repair isn’t always the right call.

Replace when:

  • The mounting tabs are broken or missing
  • Big chunks of the bumper are gone
  • The crack runs through a sensor mount or bracket
  • The repair quote is close to the price of a new bumper, painted and fitted

A cracked bumper won’t heal. Vibration and weather can spread the crack, so fix it early. Before you decide, get both numbers. We’ll price repair and replacement side by side when it’s close.

How we repair a cracked bumper

  1. We remove the bumper. [CONFIRM] Damage often hides behind the cover, so we inspect both sides.
  2. We check the mounting tabs and brackets. If they’re broken, repair isn’t the answer.
  3. We repair the crack. [CONFIRM: plastic welding, or reinforcing from behind.]
  4. We fill and sand it smooth. [CONFIRM: with flexible filler, because a bumper flexes.]
  5. We prime it.
  6. We match the colour and spray it, blending into the panels beside it where needed.
  7. We apply lacquer and let it cure. [CONFIRM: in an oven or booth.]
  8. We refit it and check the panel gaps and sensors.

Sensors, cameras and radar

Many bumpers hide parking sensors. Some carry cameras or radar. A knock can shift them, or damage their mounts and wiring. After a repair they may need checking, refitting or recalibrating.

We’ll tell you at the estimate whether yours does. [CONFIRM: We check and refit sensors here, and arrange calibration where the car needs it.] If a warning showed on the dashboard after the knock, mention it when you call.

Matching colour on plastic

A bumper is painted plastic. It can differ slightly in shade from the metal panels beside it, even from the factory. After a repair, the new paint has to sit well against the wings and doors too.

We match to your paint code, blend into the neighbouring panels where we need to, and check the result in daylight. Pearl and metallic finishes take more care. If it isn’t right, tell us before you leave. [CONFIRM: We’ll redo it at no charge.]

How long does it take?

Job Typical time

We give you a time at the estimate and tell you if it changes.

How much does bumper repair cost in Glasgow?

Prices start here. The firm price comes once we’ve seen the bumper.
Job From
A light scuff or scratch £[__]
A scrape with a gouge £[__]
A cracked bumper, repaired and resprayed £[__]
A replacement, supplied, painted and fitted £[__]
Prices include VAT. [CONFIRM: VAT status.] Price depends on how much damage there is, how the bumper is made, the make of car (newer and luxury cars cost more), the paint (pearl and metallic cost more), any sensors, and the price of the part if it needs replacing. If one quote comes in far below the rest, ask what it leaves out.

Pay yourself, claim, or non-fault?

A bumper repair often costs less than your excess. If it costs about the same, or less, claiming won’t put money in your pocket, and it may affect your premium or your no-claims discount. Check your policy, and ring your insurer if you’re unsure.

If another driver caused the damage, that’s a different question. See non-fault accident repair. For light scuffs, see smart repair.
