Diamond cut wheels look sharp until a stone chips the lacquer. Then the face goes cloudy, and it spreads. The fix is machining, not paint. We’ll also tell you if your wheel’s had all the cuts it can take.

Is your wheel diamond cut?

Look at the outer edge of the rim and the faces of the spokes. A bright, mirror-like metal surface with fine circular lines means diamond cut. The recesses between the spokes are often painted a darker grey or black. That contrast is the two-tone look.

If the wheel is one flat colour all over, it’s painted or powder coated. That’s a different job. See alloy wheel repair or powder coating.

Why diamond cut wheels go cloudy

The bright face is bare metal under a thin coat of lacquer. Lacquer struggles to grip a polished surface. One stone chip is enough to let water behind it. The lacquer lifts, the metal underneath corrodes, and the face turns milky.

It doesn’t stop there. Corrosion travels under the lacquer, so a small chip today becomes a cloudy patch next winter. Painting over it seals the corrosion in, and it usually comes back.

Your options

Wheel condition Best fix Notes
Chipped lacquer, no corrosion yet Repair the chip, re-lacquer The cheapest fix. Catch it early
Cloudy lacquer, corrosion under it Strip, re-cut, re-lacquer Removes a thin layer of metal
Deep kerb damage on the face Repair, then re-cut We assess how deep it goes
Face already cut as often as it safely can be Powder coating, or a replacement wheel Powder coating removes no metal
Crack or bend Assessment first See alloy wheel repair

How many times can a diamond cut wheel be re-cut?

Not forever. Every cut takes a thin layer of metal off the face, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. How many cuts a wheel can take depends on its design and on how much earlier cuts removed.

We measure the face before we cut. [CONFIRM: describe how.] If the wheel can’t safely take another pass, we say so. Then the options are powder coating, which removes no metal, or a replacement wheel. We won’t cut a wheel that’s too thin, whatever it means for the job.

Tell us if the wheel’s been re-cut before. It helps.

Why you can't paint a diamond cut face

Silver paint on a machined face reads as a repair. In daylight, the grain and the depth of the shine don’t match the other wheels. If someone offers to “match” a diamond cut face with paint, ask to see a finished wheel first.

You’re better off with a proper re-cut, or a powder coat in a colour you like. Both look deliberate. A paint patch looks like a patch.

How we re-cut a diamond cut wheel

We inspect and measure

We check the face, the damage and whether the wheel has been cut before. We check for cracks and bends too.

We take the tyre off.

A wheel can't be machined or lacquered with rubber on it.

We strip the old lacquer and treat corrosion

Corrosion gets removed, not covered.

We repair damage

Kerb marks and chips are dealt with before machining, and we check the wheel runs true.

We re-cut the face on the lathe

The face is mounted true and a fine layer is machined off, leaving a clean, even grain.

We refit the tyre

Balance the wheel and hand it back. [CONFIRM: including TPMS sensor handling.]

We re-lacquer and cure

The lacquer needs time to set before the wheel goes back on.

We refit the tyre

Balance the wheel and hand it back.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Curing sets the pace, not the machining. We give you a date at the estimate and tell you if it moves.
Job From Typical time
Chip repair and re-lacquer, per wheel £[__] [CONFIRM: 1 to 2 days]
Re-cut and re-lacquer, per wheel £[__] [CONFIRM: 2 to 3 days]
Two-tone recess repaint, per wheel £[__] Included in the re-cut [CONFIRM]
Set of four £[__] [CONFIRM: 3 to 4 days]
Price depends on wheel size, how deep the corrosion goes and how much needs machining. Ask what a quote includes. Lacquer, the recesses and balancing should be in it. If one quote comes in far below the rest, ask how much metal they plan to take off and what lacquer they use.

Our warranty

Diamond cut work done at Finlas Street carries a written warranty of [CONFIRM: months]. Ask for the terms before you say yes to any wheel specialist. That includes us.

Keeping the finish

Wash the wheels with a pH-neutral wheel cleaner. Harsh chemicals break down lacquer. Rinse off road salt in winter, and fix chips early. A chip caught in the first month costs less to sort than corrosion that needs cutting out a year later.

Get a price from photos

Send one straight-on photo of each wheel face, taken in daylight. Add a close-up of any damage, and tell us the wheel size and whether it’s been re-cut before. We’ll give you a guide price. [CONFIRM: photo quotes.] The firm price comes once we’ve inspected the wheel, because corrosion under lacquer hides in photos.
