Powder coating is the finish for wheels that take a beating. It’s also the way to change colour, or to save a diamond cut wheel that’s run out of cuts. It isn’t magic. We’ll tell you what it can’t fix.

Is powder coating right for your wheels?

Damage where the paint is still intact usually needs the smallest repair. Cracked paint, creased metal or a split bumper needs panel work and a respray. The table is a guide. We confirm the repair once we’ve seen the car.
Finish Look Toughness Best for
Powder coated Solid colour in gloss, satin or matt High. Baked on Colour changes, winter driving, wheels that take a beating
Wet paint and lacquer Closest factory-style match Good with care Matching original silver or a factory colour
Diamond cut Bright machined face Lacquer wears Wheels that came diamond cut, with cuts left
Replacement wheel New Not applicable Cracked, badly bent or too far gone
See alloy wheel refurbishment for the full-set decision, or diamond cutting if you want the bright face kept.

What powder coating gives you

A dry powder is sprayed on with an electrical charge, so it clings to the bare wheel. Then the wheel goes in an oven, and the powder melts into a hard skin. That skin usually stands up to chips and road salt better than most paint, and it covers evenly, including the awkward corners between spokes.

What powder coating can't do

It won’t hide deep corrosion or pitting. A coating follows the surface under it. Pitted metal shows through. We repair and smooth the wheel first. If the pitting’s too deep to smooth, we say so.

It doesn’t fix cracks or bends. Those need assessing before any finish goes on. See alloy wheel repair.

It doesn’t copy a diamond cut face. Powder coating covers the machined face. It doesn’t bring it back. If you love the bright look, diamond cutting is the job.

How we powder coat a wheel

  1. We inspect each wheel. We check for cracks and bends first. If one fails, we stop and tell you.
  2. We take the tyres off, then remove the valves and balance weights. [CONFIRM]
  3. We strip the old finish. [CONFIRM: method.] Paint, lacquer and corrosion come off.
  4. We repair damage. Kerb marks and gouges are filled and sanded smooth.
  5. We pre-heat the wheel. Cast alloy can hold trapped gases, which blister a coating if they escape mid-bake. [CONFIRM]
  6. We apply the powder in your chosen colour.
  7. We bake it until the coating cures. [CONFIRM: with a clear lacquer coat over the top, and a second bake.]
  8. We mask the fitting surfaces, so the coating doesn’t affect how the wheel sits on the hub. [CONFIRM]
  9. We refit the tyres, fit new valves and balance every wheel. [CONFIRM]

Choosing your colour and finish

Gloss gives the sharpest shine. Satin hides light dirt and small marks better. Matt looks flat and modern, but it can be harder to keep clean. Dark colours show brake dust. Silver and grey hide it.

We can match your car’s factory colour, or go custom. [CONFIRM: colour range, and whether we mix RAL colours.] Ask to see a sample in daylight before you decide. Colour on a screen lies.

How long will it take, and what does it cost?

Curing sets the pace. We give you a date at the estimate and tell you if it moves.
Job From Typical time
One wheel £[__] [CONFIRM]
Set of four, up to 18 inch £[__] [CONFIRM]
Set of four, 19 to 20 inch £[__] [CONFIRM]
Set of four, 21 inch and over £[__] [CONFIRM]
Prices include VAT. [CONFIRM: VAT status.] [CONFIRM: Tyres off and refitted, new valves and balancing are included.] Price depends on wheel size, how much prep the wheel needs and the colour. Metallic and special colours cost more. If one quote comes in far below the rest, ask about preparation, and whether tyres and VAT are included.

How long will it last?

Powder coating usually outlasts paint, but “lasts” depends on what’s under it and what you do afterwards. Preparation is most of it. Winter salt, harsh wheel cleaners and kerb strikes all wear a finish down.

Wash the wheels with a pH-neutral wheel cleaner. Rinse off road salt in winter, and fix chips early. We won’t promise a number of years without a warranty behind it. Ours is [CONFIRM: months], in writing.
